Celebrating Human Rights Day 2024 at FAU
‘Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now:’ Celebrating Human Rights Day 2024 at FAU
On December 10, 2024, in honour of Human Rights Day, professors Baranowska, Krajewski, and Pils took a step back from teaching their Human Rights Law course to hand the lead over to PhD candidate and law school students Isabel Kienzle, Jasmin Mooser, and Emma Sundt for a group action to raise awareness about human rights among FAU students and beyond.
The course brings together students of German law, participants of the interdisciplinary M.A. programme in Human Rights, and Erasmus exchange students, making for a diverse and international group of students from countries including Afghanistan, Argentina, Bangladesh, Belarus, Brazil, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Ghana, Honduras, Iran, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The students created multilingual posters, each featuring one of the thirty articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in attractively vibrant colours, and a large banner displaying this year’s official Human Rights Day theme – “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now!” Armed with these messages, they positioned themselves strategically in the Kollegienhaus university building lobby to draw the attention of students and teachers on their way to and from classes and to engage them in conversation over tea, coffee and cookies served from an impromptu stall.
Numerous conversations unfolded on topics such as current human rights violations in Gaza and the significance of Art. 3 of the UDHR, which emphasizes the right to life, liberty, and security of person.
As part of the initiative, law students Nathalie Schneider and Paula Maag conducted interviews on the students’ favourite Articles of the UDHR now available on the Centre for Human Rights Erlangen-Nürnberg (CHREN) Instagram page – do check them out!
